2008 Biennial Internship
The Seventh International Biennial titled Lucky Number Seven will run June 20 October 26, 2008 and is curated by Lance Fung.
Fung’s curatorial objectives include three main elements: first, a strong emphasis on the collaborative nature of the creative process; second, an attention to the unique environment of the exhibition and the challenges that it might pose for the artists; and third, a high degree of accessibility for viewers, coupled with intellectual rigor and a strong commitment to arts education. At the core of his proposal is the belief that the curatorial process for the SITE Biennial should be open, collaborative, and community oriented.
The participants in SITE’s Seventh Biennial include, in addition to SITE itself, 19 other like-minded institutions from around the world. Fung has selected one artist to represent each organization. The chosen artist will reflect the specific direction and ideology embraced by the participating institution. The selected artists will be invited to Santa Fe for a residency for a one-week period in January 2008 to experience what SITE and the surrounding areas have to offer. The artists will then return for a three-week period in June to create their site-specific projects.
One intern will be assigned to work directly with one Biennial artist to assist in the realization of his or her site-specific project. Fung will conduct an orientation with the Biennial artists and the chosen interns. This intensive, hands-on experience will result in familiarity about the artist’s materials, process, and technique. Interns will assist in the construction of the exhibition design and will gain invaluable experience working in a museum setting, as well as an understanding of how an international biennial exhibition is organized. At the close of the internship, each participant will receive a small artwork made by his or her respective artist.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in depth with artists, museum staff, and Biennial curator Lance Fung.
Dates for the internship are May 29 through opening weekend, which is scheduled for June 20-22, 2008. Along with your completed application, please send a cover letter, resume, and one sealed letter of reference to:
