SITE Santa Fe’s Exhibition Mission

SITE Santa Fe provides year-round exhibitions of leading-edge contemporary art with regional, national, and international significance. Since opening in July 1995, SITE has mounted over 50 major exhibitions, most of them self initiated. SITE is also a local venue for traveling exhibitions from institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, Fort Worth; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; and DIA Center for the Arts, New York.

Envisioned as an art exhibition space similar to the European kunsthalle, it is not SITE's mission to build a permanent collection. This gives the institution more flexibility, enabling it to stage major exhibitions and institute a wide range of interdisciplinary programs that are affordable and otherwise accessible to the northern New Mexico community.

Although SITE offers exhibitions year-round, its international biennial is a major priority. The biennial format involves choosing a curator, who in turn proposes a thematic exhibition of international stature, that can provide both regional and visiting audiences an opportunity to view some of today’s most advanced contemporary art. The biennial curator is selected by SITE’s director, in collaboration with SITE’s board of directors, exhibition subcommittee and international advisory committee.
