February 7, 2009 May 17, 2009 The phrase “pretty is as pretty does” is an idiom typically used to describe a beautiful girl with a nasty disposition she may look pretty, but it doesn’t follow that she acts pretty. Pretty is as Pretty Does, a group exhibition organized by Phillips Director Laura Steward Heon, takes its inspiration from this phrase and features work that suffuses base, even obscene content in otherworldly beauty. These qualities baseness and beauty are intensified by their proximity to each other in the works. This exhibition features artists working in a variety of media who have a refined aesthetic that they employ to address unsettling subjects such as violence, sexuality, and race. Several of the artists use exquisite craft media --including porcelain, cloisonné, glass, and silk brocade -- that engulfs the exhibition in a visual richness. The exhibition will be structured in a series of pairs, in most cases sculptural objects by one artist will be paired with flat work by another. SITE Santa Fe has commissioned Ligia Bouton to create a decorative motif that will appear in every gallery. She has proposed a series of ruptures of varying sizes in the walls from which fur, crystal beads, and unctuous substances will spill. Rina Banerjee and David Leigh will also create new commissions for the exhibition. The exhibition will fill SITE's galleries with over 50 works, many of them new commissions, and will offer audiences a strange visual feast, an immersive experience of sumptuously beautiful freaks. The exhibition will include works by the following artists: Chiho Aoshima; Rina Banerjee; Ligia Bouton; Tanyth Berkeley; Kathy Butterly; Angelo Filomeno; David Leigh; Marilyn Minter; Judith Schaechter; and Raqib Shaw (list in formation).

October 10, 2009 - January 10, 2010 Drawing for Projection gathers recent work by leading artists including Edgar Cleijne and Ellen Gallagher, William Kentridge, Laleh Khorramian, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Joshua Mosley, Raymond Pettibon, Robin Rhode, Berni Searle, Shahzia Sikander, and Kara Walker who each use simple animation techniques to reveal new and diverse ways of exploring what is lost and gained in the realm between the still and moving image. The resulting work presents critical narratives with a humorous spirit of experimentation and play. The title of the exhibition pays homage to William Kentridge who applied the term "drawing for projection" to his groundbreaking films made from meticulously delineated and erased charcoal drawings. The exhibition will include other examples of the historical roots of this practice with early animation pieces by artists such as Eleanor Antin, Stan Brakhage, Emile Cohl and Mel Brooks. |
