TALK WITH ALEXIS SMITH FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2001
Santa Fe, NM - In conjunction with its Fourth International Biennial exhibition,
Beau Monde: Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism, SITE Santa Fe
is pleased to present a gallery talk by noted L.A.-based artist Alexis Smith
on Friday, November 30, at 7 pm. The event is part of the Art & Culture
series. General Admission, $5; students, seniors, and SITE Santa Fe Members
at Friend and Family levels, $2.50; SITE Santa Fe Members at Supporter level
and above, Free.
Alexis Smith creates collage-like art that incorporates found objects such
as book jackets and advertisements and addresses societal ills -- including
consumerism and the objectification of women -- with irony and wit. Smith
is also known for her public art commissions, including the 560-foot-long
Snake Path (1992) at the University of California -- La Jolla; Taste (1997),
a permanent wall installation at the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles;
and a terrazzo floor for the Schottenstein Sports Arena at Ohio State University
in Columbus, among others. Smith earned her BA at the University of California
-- Irvine. She has received two National Endowment for the Arts awards and
a residency at The Rockefeller Foundation Study Center. Smith has had solo
exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Boca Raton, and Aspen, and is
represented by Margo Leavin Gallery in Los Angeles, and by ArtemisáGreenberg
Van DorenáGallery in New York. She has lectured and taught at the University
of Hawaii, The J. Paul Getty Center, University of California -- Los Angeles,
and Carnegie Mellon University.
Alexis Smith is a participating artist in SITE Santa Fe's Fourth International
Biennial, Beau Monde: Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism. Her
work, Red Carpet (2001), is a large-scale installation commissioned
by SITE Santa Fe. SITE Santa Fe's Fourth International Biennial Beau
Monde: Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism, curated by Dave Hickey,
is on exhibit through January 6, 2002.
Alexis Smith has generously created Serape Repeat (2001, silkscreen
on rag paper, 19 x 50 inches), a limited edition print for sale to benefit
SITE Santa Fe. The print references her SITE Santa Fe installation, including
an image of a large multicolored carpet with text above that reads: NOTHING
IS NEW EXCEPT WHAT HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN. The work will be on view November 30,
and collectors can purchase a print for $3,000 while the edition of 20 lasts.
