SANTA FE PRESENTS A DISCUSSION BETWEEN JENNIFER STEINKAMP AND JIMMY JOHNSON
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2001
Santa Fe, NM - In conjunction with its Fourth International Biennial exhibition,
Beau Monde Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism, SITE Santa Fe is pleased
to present a conversation between biennial artists Jennifer Steinkamp and Jimmy
Johnson, as they discuss their work and the collaborative nature of their projects
on Friday, October 26, at 7 pm. The event is part of the Art & Culture
series. General Admission, $5; students, seniors, and SITE Santa Fe Members
at Friend and Family levels, $2.50; SITE Santa Fe Members at Supporter level
and above, Free.
Jennifer Steinkamp manipulates light to "dematerialize architecture." Using
a computer to project images onto existing forms, Steinkamp not only transforms
architecture but also creates an entirely new structure. Often, these pieces
work in conjunction with their viewers, who, as they walk around an installation,
trigger motion sensors. These sensors, engineered by Steinkamp, activate changes
in color or movement in the image.
Steinkamp received her BFA and her MFA from the Art Center College of Design.
Her numerous solo exhibitions include the Greengrassi Gallery in London (1999),
the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas (2000), and ACME in Los Angeles (2000).
She has received several awards including three National Endowment for the Arts
grants, two Rockefeller Foundation grants, and a CalArts Alpert Award in the
Arts.
Jimmy Johnson is a composer, producer, sound designer, and programmer. He has
served as a consultant to Warner Brothers, MTV, NBC, and the J.Paul Getty Center.
Johnson was a faculty member at the Art Center College of Design from 1993 to
1997. He lives and works in Hollywood.
Jennifer Steinkamp and Jimmy Johnson are participating artists in SITE Santa
Fe's Fourth International Biennial, Beau Monde: Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism.
Their collaborative work, sin(time) (2001) is a DVD projection installation
with sound situated at the entrance to the exhibition.
SITE Santa Fe's Art & Culture series is partially supported by The Brown
