Modern Masters Composer Biographies

Annie Gosfield
Annie Gosfield is a composer, keyboardist, and improviser based in New York City. She divides her time between composing for chamber ensembles and performing with her own group. Her music combines traditional and non-traditional techniques, and is often inspired by unorthodox and non-musical sources. She has led ensembles performing her work at Lincoln Center as part of the yearly Bang on a Can Festival; Festival Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Canada; and Musique Action Internationale in Nancy, France; among others. Ms. Gosfield studied piano with French jazz pianist Bernard Peiffer and Horowitz student Alexander Fiorillo, and studied composition at North Texas State University and the University of Southern California.

John Harbison
John Harbison is one of America's most prominent composers. Among his principal works are three string quartets; three symphonies; the cantata The Flight Into Egypt, which earned him a Pulitzer Price in 1987; and three operas including The Great Gatsby, which was commissioned by The Metropolitan Opera and premiered to great acclaim in December 1999. Harbison's music is distinguished by its exceptional resourcefulness and expressive range. He has written for every conceivable type of concert performance, ranging from the most intimate to the grandest. His pieces embrace jazz along with pre-classical forms of Schutz and Bach, the graceful tonality of Prokofiev, and the rigorous atonal methods of later Stravinsky.

Roger Kleier
Roger Kleier is a guitarist, composer, and improviser who began playing electric guitar at age 13 after discovering Captain Beefheart and Hendrix on the radio airwaves of Los Angeles. He studied composition at North Texas State University and the University of Southern California, and during his studies he developed a strong interest in non-idiomatic improvisation and alternative techniques for the guitar. His unique style draws equally from improvisation, contemporary classical music, and the American guitar traditions of blues, jazz, and rock. Much of his compositional work involves the development of a broader vocabulary for the electric guitar through the use of extended techniques and digital technology.

Kaija Saariaho
Kaija Saariaho is a Finnish composer who lives and works in Paris. She studied composition under Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy and later at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg with Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber, receiving her diploma there in 1983. In 1982 she attended courses in computer music at IRCAM in Paris, where the computer became an important element of her composing technique.

SITE Santa Fe is located at 1606 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, NM. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am - 5 pm, Friday, 10 am - 7 pm. Docent tours on Fridays at 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. Tours in Spanish are by appointment. Call 505.989.1199 for more information.
