SANTA FE PRESENTS AN EXHIBITION OF LARGE-SCALE PRINTS BY NOTED NEW MEXICO ARTIST
HARMONY HAMMOND: MONSTER PRINTS
February 16 - March 3, 2002 Santa Fe, NM - SITE Santa Fe presents HARMONY
HAMMOND: MONSTER PRINTS, an exhibition of monumental monoprints with
a free public opening reception to preview the exhibition on Friday, February
15, 2002, from 6-7 pm. There will be a gallery talk with Harmony Hammond on
Saturday, February 16 at 5 pm.
Primarily known for her large mixed-media paintings, Harmony Hammond's most
recent series of 11 monoprints was completed in 2001 at the Contemporary Artists
Center in North Adams, Massachusetts, where she worked on the center's "monster
press," one of the largest non-commercial printing presses in the country. Measuring
5 x 10 feet, the new series demonstrates Hammond's ongoing interest in materiality
and process, and pushes the limitations of monoprinting. She uses thicker ink
than is usual in monoprinting, creating complex surfaces that combine a clean
minimal formalism with post-minimal process. The prints are remarkable for their
rich surfaces and the metallic "bronzing" effect, which is especially noticeable
in the dark tones.
Harmony Hammond moved to Santa Fe in 1984, and has lived and worked in Galisteo,
New Mexico, since 1989. Hammond is considered one of the pioneers of the feminist
art movement. She co-founded A.I.R., the first women's cooperative art gallery
in New York City. She also co-founded and co-edited Heresies: A Feminist Publication
on Art and Politics.
Harmony Hammond has had over 30 solo exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. She
is represented in the permanent collections of many major art museums including
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago,
the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Museum
of Fine Arts in Santa Fe. Hammond has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim
Fellowship and two National Endowment for the Arts grants.
HARMONY HAMMOND: MONSTER PRINTS is presented in conjunction with MONOTHON
16, a benefit exhibition for The College of Santa Fe's Printmaking Center.
Curated by Gregory Kondos, MONOTHON 16 is the culmination of The College
of Santa Fe's MONOTHON, the annual marathon of monoprinting that attracts hundreds
of artists, spectators, and buyers from Northern New Mexico and the United States.
Printing sessions took place in January in Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque.
MONOTHON 16 is open to the public and will be on exhibit at SITE Santa
Fe from February 23-March 3. For more information, please call The College of
Santa Fe's Printmaking Center, 505.473.6564.
