Santa Fe to exhibit Agnes Martin and Richard Tuttle |
Santa
Fe, NM--From Sunday, August 16 through Sunday, October 18, 1998 SITE Santa Fe
will exhibit Agnes Martin and Richard Tuttle. Organized by the Modern Art Museum
of Fort Worth's Chief Curator, Michael Auping, this exhibition presents the
work of Agnes Martin alongside the work of her long-time friend Richard Tuttle.
There is a free public opening for the exhibition on Sunday, August 16 from
5:00-7:00 p.m., and a free gallery talk by Michael Auping prior to the opening
beginning at 3:00 p.m. Concurrently showing with this exhibition, SITE Santa
Fe presents UNLAND/Doris Salcedo.
The survey includes approximately a dozen works by each artist, exposing
various points of aesthetic convergence, such as the use of diffused color,
a reliance on line and drawing and intimate scale. Auping has worked closely
with each artist to select works that emphasize connections between their
individual aesthetics. Major loans from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture
Garden and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C., as well as private
collections throughout the United States are included. The exhibition is accompanied
by a catalogue featuring an essay by Auping and interviews with each of the
artists.
AGNES MARTIN/RICHARD TUTTLE serves as both an homage to Martin, who is now
85 years old, and an illustration of the influence her work has played in
Tuttle's artistic career. Tuttle first met Martin in the fall of 1963, when
he visited Martin's South Street New York studio. The two artists have since
experienced a career-long friendship.
SITE Santa Fe is located at 1606 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, NM. Exhibition
hours are 10 a.m-5:00 p.m seven days a week. Admission is $2.50 for adults
and $1.00 for students and seniors; Sundays are free. Docent tours are offered
on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. and tours in Spanish are
available by appointment. Call 505/989-1199 for more information.
