Cannupa Hanska Luger is a New Mexico based multidisciplinary artist and cultural innovator whose work merges Indigenous knowledge with contemporary art to shift narratives and foster systemic change. An enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara) and Lakota, Luger was born on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota and is based in Glorieta, New Mexico.
Known for his large-scale installations, land-based performances, and collaborative projects, Luger’s work has been featured on the cover of National Geographic, profiled in The New York Times Magazine and Art21, and exhibited globally, including at the Whitney Biennial, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Sharjah Biennial. His work is held in numerous public collections. He is a 2025 National Geographic Wayfinder Award recipient and a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow.
