A Conversation with Artist Diego Medina

Patterns of Eschatology: Reconciling History Through Mystical Praxis

Join us for an informal conversation with 12th SITE SANTA FE International Biennial artist Diego Medina (Piro-Manso-Tiwa). Originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico and now based in Santa Fe, Medina is an artist and poet whose work combines ancestral wisdom with fantastical imagery. Merging ecological with cosmological knowledge, Medina’s practice reflects his own personal spirituality and interests in expressions of mysticism.

Diego Medina's series of paintings for the 12th SITE SANTA FE International used historically contentious geographic landmarks in southern New Mexico to recreate a spiritual map inspired by the Via Crucis, or the Stations of the Cross. The contemplative pilgrimage through these different geographic points—these mystical stations—became a symbolic template for the spiritual journey inward to the place of mystical revelation.

Medina will discuss the process of creating this series and further explore the nuanced history of the locations depicted in the paintings, using their history and geography as a way to explore circular narrative and the esoteric nature of eschatology.

Refreshments will be provided.
