History

Since its founding in 1995, programming at SITE SANTA FE starts with the artists, providing them with the freedom to define the space both conceptually and physically in an atmosphere of true collaboration between artist and institution.
Through visual art, music, poetry, and other creative endeavors, SITE SANTA FE’s programs engage audiences across diverse cultures, ages, and communities.

SITE SANTA FE’s International (formerly known as the SITE SANTA FE Biennial) is core to the institution’s mission and is the foundation of robust year-round programming. The International provides a platform for artists and curators to realize work they would not be able to create elsewhere and creates opportunities for artists from around the world to respond to the unique geography, history, and cultures of New Mexico.

The first edition in 1995 was, at the time, the only community-wide international biennial of contemporary art in the United States and one of only a handful of biennials around the world, and has since served as a model for countless exhibitions of its kind around the world.
The International draws artists and curators from around the world while also nurturing a thriving local art scene.

SITE SANTA FE celebrates community and supports locally-based artists through a variety of programmatic and exhibition opportunities, including free educational and social experiences.
Committed to providing opportunities for educators and learners of all ages and abilities, SITE SANTA FE’s programming facilitates connections between artists and local communities, expanding imaginations and contributing to the vibrant creativity of Santa Fe.

MISSION & VISION

Guided by artists, rooted in New Mexico, SITE SANTA FE celebrates contemporary creative expression.

We aspire to be an internationally recognized destination for art and artists and a trusted community resource for creativity and learning.

VALUES

We value being a part of Santa Fe’s rich and diverse cultural communities, working in a spirit of reciprocity with our partners and collaborators.

We value our extraordinary environment and are dedicated to the prudent use of ecological resources.

We value maintaining high standards of integrity, professionalism, generosity, and fiscal sustainability, and seek always to evolve as an institution.
