Rosa Martínez is a curator, writer and art collections consultant based in Barcelona, Spain. She holds a degree in Art History from the Central University of Barcelona. Most notably, she was Artistic Director of the 2005 Venice Biennale, one of the first female curators in the 110-year history of this international exhibition. She has also been Artistic Director/Curator of the Biennials of Barcelona (1988-1992); Rotterdam, The Netherlands (1996); Istanbul, Turkey (1997); SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA (1999); Busan, Korea (2000); Sao Paulo, Brazil (2006) and Moscow, Russia (2005- 2007) enjoying the relevance of this specific exhibition model for more than twenty years.
Rosa Martinez was Chief Curator of the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (2004-2007). She has also curated several prestigious projects and group exhibitions, including shows at the Guggenheim Bilbao for its 10th anniversary in 2007; the National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid, Spain (2015-2016) for the 500th anniversary of Saint Teresa of Avila; the Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito, Ecuador (2017), a thematic show on “Sex, Gender,Language and Power”, or “In the Name of the Father” an exhibition on the genealogic influence of Picasso on Spanish artists at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona (2019), among others. In 2018, she organized the multi-site exhibition “Constellation Malta”, which was part of the celebrations for Valletta as European Capital of Culture. Rosa Martínez has also curated solo exhibitions of internationally renowned artists such as Santiago Sierra at the Spanish Pavilion in Venice in 2003 or Anish Kapoor at the Convent of Las Claras in Murcia, Spain, in 2008. Since 2020 she has organized many solo exhibitions of younger artists such as Austin Camilleri, Tania Berta Judith or Saskia Calderón.
She is currently (2023-2025) curator of contemporary art for a travelling exhibition on "Feminine Power" for the British Museum and Fundación La Caixa. In December 2024, she was appointed Artistic Director of the second edition of the Malta Biennale, which will take place from 11 March to 29 May 2026 through various historical locations in Malta and Gozo. The title “CLEAN, CLEAR, CUT” is a call for action to stop environmental, ethical and aesthetical pollution and to enhance meaningful dialogues between the magnificent heritage of the islands and contemporary art.
