Sara Raza

Dr Sara Raza is an award-winning global art curator and writer, she is the current Artistic Director and Chief Curator of the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) in Tashkent. Author of Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion (Black Dog Press, 2022), she is a core critic and faculty member at the Yale School of Art and New York University.

Specializing in visual cultures from a postcolonial and post-Soviet perspective, Sara is the recipient of the 11th ArtTable New Leadership Award for Women in the Arts. She has curated exhibitions and projects for international biennials, festivals and museums and is a former Solomon R. Guggenheim and Tate Modern curator.

In 2019, Sara established her global curatorial studio practice, Punk Orientalism Studio, culminating almost two decades of dynamic independent and institutional thematically driven global curatorial work across Asia, the Caucasus, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and North America. The studio’s activities include exhibition making and curatorial knowledge, publishing, lecturing, creating curricula, and contemporary collecting practices. Through the Studio, she has collaborated with Qatar Museums (Mathaf and Lusail), Doha, International Center of Photography, New York, Tufts University Art Galleries Somerville, MA, Rubin Museum, New York, the Arts and Culture Development Foundation, Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia among others. She has taught across several departments at the New York University, and the School of Visual Arts.
