Native Visual Sovereignty: Book Launch and Reading

Please join us for an afternoon of performances and readings celebrating Native Visual Sovereignty: A Reader on Art and Performance. This anthology is the first to focus on performance and performativity in contemporary Native art. With 48 contributors, it includes newly commissioned essays, artist notes, reprinted critical texts, and oral history interviews, highlighting the shift from visual to performative sovereignty.

Editor Candice Hopkins (Citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation) will be joined by contributors Brandee Caoba, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Kent Monkman, Jolene Rickard, Eric-Paul Riege for a series of performative readings.

Native Visual Sovereignty is co-published by Dancing Foxes Press in association with the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Forge Project, MacKenzie Art Gallery, and SITE SANTA FE. The publication accompanies the touring exhibition Indian Theater: Performance, Art, and Self-Determination since 1969, curated by Hopkins and originating at the Hessel Museum of Art in 2023 and on view at SITE SANTA FE June 5–September 7, 2026.
