Nuevo Romancero, Nuevomexicano: Opening event for Unsettled Landscapes

Performances by Unsettled Landscapes artist Pablo Helguera

Pablo Helguera presents the first part of Nuevo Romancero Nuevomexicano, a multi-disciplinary project commissioned by SITE Santa Fe. Using the literary and musical format of the Romance, an art form that has been remarkably preserved in New Mexico from the colonial era, Helguera unearths known and obscure stories connected to the little studied Mexican period of New Mexico (1821-1846). This compendium of stories, incorporating the forbidden card games of the Mexican period, will be performed at the San Miguel Chapel, the oldest church in the United States. Helguera will be joined by musicians Joaquín Gallegos, Sitara Schauer, and Alysha Shaw.

Unsettled Landscapes

Unsettled Landscapes looked at the urgencies, political conditions and historical narratives that inform the work of contemporary artists across the Americas – from Nunavut to Tierra del Fuego. Through three themes – landscape, territory, and trade – this exhibition expresses the interconnections among representations of the land, movement across the land, and economies and resources derived from the land.
