Paul Chaat Smith in conversation with Candice Hopkins
UPCOMING
06 JUN 2026, 2 PM
Curator Talk
Marlene Nathan Meyerson Auditorium
Join us for an inspiring reading and conversation with Paul Chaat Smith, renowned Comanche author, essayist, curator and activist and Candice Hopkins, curator of Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self-Determination since 1969. Together, they will explore the lasting influence of Indian activism and its impact on contemporary Native art, politics, and culture, and examine how artistic practice, scholarship, and advocacy remain essential tools for resistance, renewal, and self-determination. Smith’s book Like a Hurricane: The Indian Movement from Alcatraz to Wounded Knee (1996, with Robert Warrior), remains one of the most singular texts on the formative era of Native activism in the United States.
