Alexis Smith creates collage-like art that incorporates found objects such as book jackets and advertisements and addresses societal ills — including consumerism and the objectification of women — with irony and wit. Smith is also known for her public art commissions, including the 560-foot-long Snake Path (1992) at the University of California — La Jolla; Taste (1997), a permanent wall installation at the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles; and a terrazzo floor for the Schottenstein Sports Arena at Ohio State University in Columbus, among others. Smith earned her BA at the University of California — Irvine. She has received two National Endowment for the Arts awards and a residency at The Rockefeller Foundation Study Center. Smith has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Boca Raton, and Aspen, and is represented by Margo Leavin Gallery in Los Angeles, and by ArtemisáGreenberg Van DorenáGallery in New York. She has lectured and taught at the University of Hawaii, The J. Paul Getty Center, University of California — Los Angeles, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Alexis Smith is a participating artist in SITE Santa Fe’s Fourth International Biennial, Beau Monde: Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism. Her work, Red Carpet (2001), is a large-scale installation commissioned by SITE Santa Fe.
